Hello,

First off - cool! Here are a few of my favorite things so far:

  • Password reset instead of email
  • Better File Manager
  • Custom Tab Settings
  • Grouped Profile Properties
  • Integrated the tabs in the profile area to reduce confusion.

Here are some comments from stuff I've seen:

  1. The password reset form still asks for either username or email address - this has been really confusing for my users... most try to enter both or just complain that they can't remember their username to begin with. I changed the language quite a bit, but it would be better, I think, to make it a quick question "Do you know your username?" or something and then direct them to the next box accordingly.
    1. Also, when I tried it, the password reset email didn't seem to contain the password. I have a suspicious feeling this might be because I upgraded but had changed the password email template. If that's right, it would be very good to provide a list of those kinds of changes admins need to make - otherwise, the upgrade could cause a lot of confusion and trouble for no good reason.
  2. I use a custom login module that seems to not work anymore. That's OK - I get I might need to update it - but do you know if there's any new documentation on how we do that to conform to the new standard?
  3. The URL provider stuff all seems pro-edition only. But, this leaves a few basic questions for community stuff then:
    1. Can I turn on the no-"aspx" thing on an existing site, and, if I do, if somebody goes to the .aspx page, will it automatically redirect properly?
    2. Going back to the community voice request, will there just be a simple way to change the URL name for a tab? I think most people don't actually care that much about a lot of fancy URL stuff, they just want to be able to have a slightly different "URL Name" from the "Page Name"... That would go a long way.
  4. I use an automatically created "Display Name" to force users to have their display name always be their First and Last names. But, when I upgraded, the display name field became an editable text box again.
  5. The file manager isn't building the tree on the left... it just shows "Root" and doesn't expand. I would guess this is a known issue.

On the whole... I am really pumped about this version - what you have so far here looks like some long needed improvements to a few of the basic things around DNN that will really help the overall experience.

Great job!

Mike

thanks for the comments - FYI we mostly prepared this as an install package and only did some upgrade testing and there are a few known issues with upgrades (including the issue with file manager not expanding) - we're working hard on these, so the next release should be a lot better.

as to the password mail - 7.1.0 uses hashed passwords by default so a fresh install of it cannot send out a password -this is part of the reason why we send out password reset links (they're also more secure) - as long as you receive a password reset link when you reset/send the password that's behavior by design.

Im not sure why a login module would stop working, we didn't really do anything in that area, though theres a lot of change so perhaps try when the first beta comes out and if it still happens log an issue in Gemini

AFAIK the page rename logic is in place, if you rename a page you'll find that it still has the same name (and a record to do the redirect is created) - we'll be adding documentation to the wiki in the next weeks that should help explain things.

Hey Cathal,

Yeah - I figured as much on the install package... Makes perfect sense.

On the password email - yes, I am a big supporter of moving to hashed passwords. What I meant was that - probably since I'd changed the password reset email slightly - the email I was getting when I did a reset didn't have the link. Unless I'm missing something, I'd say the easy fix is to make a new localization key for the body of the password reset link email - that way, if people have changed that email in the past, they won't need to change it when 7.1 comes out.

I'll keep an eye on the login module thing... probably just a fluke from the upgrade... it is an alpha. I'll let you know if I see something in the beta and I'll try to actually track it down.

Great to hear about the redirects.

Thanks again for your comments and your guys' work on this - it really is looking like a great release.

Mike
