Hi, I installed the community edition with the full source (using the file "DotNetNuke_Community_05.01.04_Source"). When I went through the installation of my portal I choose the "Custom" option (as opposed to "Typical" or "Auto"). When I got to the page in the wizard where you can select the modules you want to install, I installed everything. It seemed to go fine, but when I loaded the solution file in Visual Studio 2008 and built it, it complains because none of the code-behind files are present for the additional modules. For example, in the "DesktopModules\Store" folder, the AddressEdit.ascx is there, but there's no AddressEdit.ascx.cs code-behind, even though the .ascx file references it. Why didn't these get installed and where do I find them?

Thanks!

That's a great question.

The Source version of the framework is just that.  Source for the framework.  Each of the modules is actually a separate project in its own right and packaged as both install and source versions also.  We only bundle the install versions of the modules, referring folks to the individual project downloads as needed.  You can find all the project downloads here.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the answer... I think I'm starting to understand this now. It just seems a little odd not to include the code-behind along with the modules since I thought this version of the installer (the "source" version) is intended to be used from a development environment. If you can't do a compile after installing it, it's very confusing (especially to us newbies).

Anyway, thanks again for the answer.

Phil

please be aware, DNN does not support precompile, i.e. the "build" option of VS does not apply to the DNN web site, only for the library and providers, which are compiled into dotnetnuke.dll. Web site gets JIT compiled on first browse.

you do not need the source for developing your own extensions (modules, skins) - though I find it handy, if I need to understand what happens when calling a core method.

PS: if you are starting module development, have a look at Michael Washington's tutorials at dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com.
