I have added the particular user before and deleted him during testing.  Now I am trying to add his account back and it gives me the error that "A user already exists for the username specified.  Please register again using a different username."

I literally only have four (4) user accounts within the portal and that is not one of them.  However, on the main page I have the UsersOnline module loaded and it shows five (5) total memberships.

Any ideas on how to clear this "ghost user"?

Thanks

When users are deleted in DNN they are "soft" deleted, they aren't actually completely removed. You can either go into the database and undelete him, or you can use the SQL in this blog post I made a few weeks ago to completely delete the user.

I am stunned that we need to go into the database and run a bunch of SQL to delete a user. Is this been corrrected?

This is by design, as Chris pointed out. A soft delete leaves a user in the database - which makes your database's integrety holds. Otherwise, other modules that link to that user might lose their link.

It might be prudent to instruct people more about it (in the manuals) or provide some basic functionality to "hard" delete... but in my experience a soft delete is the best choice you can make.

Judy,

User deletes do work. They are just soft deletes and the records do stay in the database and the record is marked as deleted.  However once an username is used, it cannot be reused until a hard delete is performed.  This is the issue awaiting correction.  See http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/ViewIssue.aspx?id=10482&PROJID=2 for additional background on this issue.

The scripts mention by Chris do delete users from the database and will address the issue where you want to re-add the delete user.

Hope this helps
Paul.
