Hello:  I've been happily using DNN for the last couple of years to run a fantasy football website, but I was wondering if anyone would tell me if this is the right CMS to use?   It seems like the application is moving to more of a "business framework" direction and is shrugging off social media.  At least that's the impression that I got when I installed the latest version and found that the blog module was no longer offered as a standard extension.  The workflow features also seems to signify a clear shift in that direction.  Is it time for me to move to a different CMS?  Have I even been using the right one to begin with?  Would someone please let me know their thoughts on the appropriateness of using DNN for a fantasy football (or any non-business/social) site?  Thanks

While you might assume that the BLOG module is no longer included, what you'll find is that ALL the modules except for a couple are no longer installed by default. This is for performance reasons. The more modules you have installed, the more resources your website uses and that can degrade performance.

Those modules however are all still available, they just need to be installed before use. Go to the Host/Extensions page, from the actions menu choose the Install Available Extensions option, you'll find all the "core" modules there.

The blog module is actually getting ready for a new and much needed release.

DNN isn't trying to shirk away from Social Media aspects, I can assure you of that. The platform will continue to grow, from a business sense as you've seen, but in other ways as well. The new taxonomy features and folksonomy features coming in DNN 5.4 are intended for that social (crowd sourcing) aspect.

I think DNN is still a great platform to build a fantasy football website off of, or any other non-business type of site. All of my personal sites run on DNN, many of them having originally run on CommunityServer.

I can't speak specifically to a fantasy sports site but I can comment on some of the direction around social media. With DNN 5.3.1, we integrated user profile as a page in the site. We also integrated private messaging, which to me both cater to social networking. As for the blog, and other modules, they simply can be downloaded via CodePlex so they haven't been discontinued or anything like that. The most recent version of the blog that is available also has some Twitter integration, as does the Events module if I remember correctly.

So, my point is while you do see some things which may appear to be catering to the business world we are still going forward with 'social media' aspects as well. Personally, some of the items like 'workflow' I don't really consider just business world necessities. Lots of people like things such as versioning for content for their personal sites.

You will also find that ActiveSocial, a product of ActiveModules, has a very rich set of social networking features.
