Hello all..

I'm finding that learning to create my own skin is going to take me much longer than I'd like, so I'm looking to purchase Skin packages that I can use and/or modify in the interim.  Obviously I'm a bit of newb to DNN so before I just purchase the first skin pack on Snowcovered I wanted to make sure I was aking the right questions.

I've been asking the following general questions:
  • Type of Menu used, and can I modify it relatively easily via CSS or an Admin Control
  • Do you use mostly Tables or Divs? - I've seen a lot of chatter about using Divs only.
  • Is there a LOGO Pane? - Seems like almost all the ones I've viewed just seem to only show Banner Panes at the top.
I've also asked specific questions regarding certain features, and I've reviewed the licesing info, but that's the gist of it.  I'm just concerned that I might be leaving some important questions out, so if anyone has any other suggestion please let me know.

Also all the Skins i've reviewed say they are W3C complaint, however is there a way to confirm that, prior to purchasing it?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

1. mostly skins you buy on Snowcovered are ready, meaning you can have horizontal/vertical/both menu (is this what you meant by meny type?) depending on the vendor selling the skin packs. It is however always possible to change the menu via CSS but then it's on your own.
2. I personally use UL and LI tag for menu, DIV is also fine, but avoid TABLE if you want to have an SEO friendly site. So check the source code of the skin if you wanna make sure.
3. Logo pane depends on the vendor, some provide, some don't. Pane is just a placeholder where you can put almost any kind of content there, so if you see a banner pane on the top of the page, you can put your logo there as well.

Mostly they have demo of the skins they are selling, with this demo URL you can check whether it is w3C compliant here

Arief..Thanks for the reply..

I was referring to the type of menu, meaning whether it was NavMenu, SolParts Menu, or some 3rd party menu that I may have to purchase separately and/or install..

In regards to the Logo Pane, I'm a bit confused.  When I've downloaded one of the skin demos and it did not have a "LOGO" pane but Banner pane at the top,  The logo I assigned, via the Logo settings from the Admin menu, didn't show up on that page.  I'm not that familiar with the Banners module, yet, but wouldn't it be easier to apply the Logo via the Admin menu, this is if you want the same image on every page.

Also thanks for the compliant link..

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Regarding the menu type, depends on the vendor, normally they include menu (could be solpart/anything else), but if you want to extend/change it, i recommend Menu Box.

Logo pane actually doesn't exists. Instead, it is actually a skin object which you can embed it in the header section of your skin. So you might tweak the skin a little bit to accommodate the logo.

HTH

Thanks again for the info..

One of the Skin Packs I'm looking at is using the JQuery menu.  I'm not familiar with that, at least not yet.  Is that something I should consider good, bad, or indifferent?

Thanks,
Bob
