I have committed to setting up a website for our Cub Scout Pack.  I believe DNN is the best and easiest solution for me to accomplish this.

I have set up a virtual PC to act as the development environment to develop the site from, and I am a little overwhelmed about which versions of software I should use.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit on the Host machine and I am getting the feeling that is not necessarily the best operating system to develop my first DNN site from.  The Guest machine (i.e. the development environment)  I've set up is Windows 7 32-bit

Now the hard part, what is the best (i.e. most stable) version of DNN that I should install given the Win 7 32-bit machine?  Given whatever version of DNN you recommend, what version of SQL should I run?  I am assuming that since it is a Win 7 op. system that, by default, I'll be using IIS 7(I believe).

I have a copy of SQL Server Developer Edition 2005 that I could install, or I could use a free copy of SQL Express '05 or '08.  I am planning to host the site on Go Daddy, if that makes any difference.

From all I have read, getting the install of DNN correct from the start seems to be the biggest challenge.  I can't wait to get at DNN for real and get past all these "big picture" questions.

Thanks for your help!

please don't double post questions, see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/107/threadid/370229/scope/posts/Default.aspx. you may and windows 7 to develop your site, any sql server version starting with SQL Server 2005 Express will be fine, DNN doesn't make use of any of the improvements of SQL Server 2008 or 2008 R2. The easiest option to start is using MS web platform installer, obtainable from www.microsoft.com/web

Thank you Sebastain. Sorry about the double post however I received error messages when attempting to submit my post and they did not appear to commit. Hence the long version of the post to the short version, I got tired of retyping. There should actually be three posts, not sure why the long version made it through. Maybe the moderator caught one dupe. In any case, thank you again for the information. I think I am going to attempt to set up my SQL database manually and forego the platform installer as you suggest. I've joined DNN Creative and they have some great videos on how to install without the installer. If it becomes too much I'll fall back on the installer.

I am not aware of another dupe I deleted during moderation, however I always prefer to use a blank attached SQL database instead of database.mdf. Lee provides for sure great value on dnncreative.com. Installation shouldn't be too difficult, if you are an experienced web admin, otherwise the MS installer might be the preferable solution. good luck!
