Hi folks, this is my first time working with a DNN site. I've been asked to admin an existing site and I want to determine what version the site is running and how important is it to be on the latest version. I'd also like your opinions on third party tools to back up the site. Thanks for your patience with a noob.

If you have a superuser account (common username is HOST) you can login and go to the Host menu, and see if you have an EXTENSIONS page listed, from that page you can see what version of DNN you are on. you can also try the HOST/HOST SETTINGS page.

If you don't have HOST access you are going to find you'll be limited in being able to install additional skins and extensions.

If you have an ADMIN login (less access than host) you can see if there is an ADMIN/EXTENSIONS page.

As for your other questions.

How important is it to run on the latest version: that really depends on a number of things, I generally recommend it, but the ultimate decision will come down to questions like (do you have custom modules on your site, will those modules work with the latest version of DNN, do you need to address security issues).

As for third party tools to backup the site, I honestly find backing up my website and database manually is my preferred method.

Is there any way to determine the DNN version by looking at the site files themselves? I have a preconfigured deployment of DNN that I have Host and Admin access to, but those pages don't yield the usual information (actually, they don't display anything but empty panes).

Thanks in advance!

Justin, file properties of dotnetnuke.dll should display the version, besides you may check highest number in dataprovider filenames inside folder /Providers/dataproviders/sqldataprovider
