Hello guys,

1.
I am facing a problem with my website. While my website was working fine, i accedently copied Database.mdf file from my localhost to remote server (already existing Database.mdf file was over-written). It shouldn't be a problem i guess, but now whenever i try to open the website, it just goes to the install directory and error page and displays the "under construction" page.
I am not getting onething, whenever there is some change in the database, why dnn always goes to install directory?

2.
second, i have uploaded my website to a web host. Then i made some changes in the home page on my localhost and added some modules on it, now i want to upload the updated home page to web host as well. Can you please tell me exactly which files do i need to upload on web host?

Regarding #1 - When you over-wrote Database.mdf on the remote server and assuming that the remote server was using Database.mdf, you essentially replaced the content (except for image and other document files) on the remote server with that of the localhost. Because it is unlikely that both localhost and remote servers were of the same DotNetNuke version with the identical type and version of modules, skins, and other extensions installed, this will likely render the site un-repairable. If you have not already done so, try to restore the remote Database.mdf file from a recent backup. The redirection to the install directory when you hit the remote site is an indication that it can no longer connect to its database or that the database is of a different version than that of the DotNetNuke assembly. A look at the remote site's web.config file's database connection strings will indicate if that site was making use of Database.mdf or connecting to a different MS SQL Server database. If the latter, the site may be recoverable as the issue may have been caused by accidental changes to files other than the database.

Regarding #2 - With the exception of image and other document files, skin files, etc.  that may have been uploaded to the site, all of the site's content is stored in the database. With the exception of default.aspx (which should NOT be modified), all of the "pages" that you create and modify are not physical pages but are created on the fly from the contents of the database. Therefore it is not possible to upload updated pages, such as the "Home" page to the remote site. In most cases it is best to make changes only to the remote site and not to the local site with the expectation that local changes can then be uploaded or published to the remote site.

Hi William.

1. Yes the problem was with database and i restored the remote db as suggested by you and things are working fine now. Thanks.

2. For some reasons, i have to do the changes on localhost first and then update the remote site. So if i am making changes to content only (and not to skin and images), in that case it would be enough to update only the database to the remote server?

3. One more issue i am facing on my localhost is, i made changes to the content and then i need to update the database on my remote server. For that i need to create a backup of my localhost database. Now, when I attach my localhost database to sqlstudioExpress for making a .bak file, my localhost website stops working after that :(
I mean, i attached my local database in sqlstudioExpress, created a database backup. Now after that when i access my localhost website, it starts reinstalling dnn by going to install directory.
I am not getting this thing why my local database gets disturbed whenever i take a backup of db. Now since my local website is not working and i've got the db backup, what should i do to get my localhost website working?

regarding 3, please read here: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/1202/DNN-SQLExpress-SQL-Server-Management-Studio.aspx I always prefer using attached databases instead.

Hi Sebastian, i performed the same steps as mentioned but this didn't helped. Last time this problem occured, my site started working automatically after 1 day (i was unable to identify how it started working again).

Now again i attached my database to studio express for taking backup and my site is not working anymore.
