Hi,

I'm now trying to create my first dummy module. I created a website in my Visual Studio, added user control (files MyFirstModule.ascx, MyFirstModule.ascx.cs), and inserted some basic controls to it. I tested the user control on my Default.aspx form and it worked properly.

Then I added this new control to my DNN installation with option Create Module From: Control, and pointed the wizard to the MyFirstModule.ascx file. The new module has appeared on the list of all available modules. However, when I insert it to a page, I'm getting the following error:

>>>>>>>>
Error: My First Module is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.UI.Modules.ModuleHost.LoadModuleControl() --- End of inner exception stack trace ---
<<<<<<<<

Could you please help me with that?

Best regards,

Mark

Mark, to be honest, I would totally recommend doing your module development differently. Watch my free Basic Module Dev training video http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/T...

Then check out the Wiki entry about Module Development http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W...

If you follow the approach I recommend in there (setting up your environment, using a module development template) you'll find DNN module development a lot easier.

Hi Chris,

Is there any "off-line" version of this video? I can't browse it from my offce - probably due to some firewall issues, so I would like to download it and view from my hard disk.

Mark, besides the video, there are great online tutorials by core team fellow Michael Washington at dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com - and I also recommend reading latest book on DNN, called "DotNetNuke 5.4 Cookbook" by John K. Murphy at Packt Publishing.

Hi Sebastian,

I tried that tutorial. I liked it very much due to its simplicity. Unfortunately, it led me to the error which I described at the beginning of this thread :( Maybe I didn't notice a part of the training about deployment from local dev environment to a target DNN installation.
