I am new to DNN so I want to know in future when new versions will come.

1) How difficult or easy is to upgrade DNN ?

2) What about modules ? what is the process to upgrade modules/add-on plugins ?

3) How modules are related to the DNN project update ? By That I mean, does DNN Module needs to be updated if we are updating DNN project to higher version ? or what if we are still using same version of DNN and new version of module is out ? can we update just the module ?

Good explanation for this would be really appreciated, I am new to DNN.

Upgrades depend a lot of what versions you are upgrading from.

Many upgrades run smoothly - though others can go pearshaped
- this does depend a lot of times on how different modules operate and dependencies they may have.

When you do a core upgrade -- new modules are not installed automatically - you need to upgrade modules on their own.
This goes for CORE modules as well - the only module that tends to get upgraded automatically in the HTML module.

Some modules are also version specific - that is they only run on particular dnn versions - if you are upgrading and have 3rd party modules it is always best to make sure they have an updated version for the latest dnn core.

Wes did explain the most questions correctly, I'd just like to add the process of upgrading:
  • Backup all files and the database
  • make sure to use latest version of all modules, providers and skin objects
  • if necesserry, install updated packages like new installs.
  • download the upgrade package of DotNetNuke from dotnetnuke.codeplex.com
  • make sure in file properties, that the zip is unblocked
  • unzip all files hierarchically and copy over existing files in your install directory
  • browse your site to trigger database upgrade process
  • done :)

thank you very much.

Is there any location from where I can download previous versions of DNN so that I can test the upgrade feature with modules to get more familiar with DNN ?

Every version of dnn back to the initial 1.00 release in 2003 is available for download on http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/releas....

But really not exactly sure what you are expecting to see - modules are updated by simply uploaded the new version of the module to your site using the Extensions/Module tool on found on the Host menu - name varies depending on your dnn version.

DNN code upgrades on the other hand are performed by physically copying the contents of the new version into the root folder of your dnn website.  And then browsing to the site - to let the upgraded module run any sql and core patches that need to occur.
