I have looked at several social networking modules but it's overkill for what I need. I just want registered users to request to join one or more groups. Admin gets an email notification and can add them to the group. They get access to that groups content.  Can this be done with the core modules?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

out of the box there is no pull mechanism for role membership , so you would have to code this functionality yourself. We do have a push membership via rsvp code (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/Role-RSVP-Code.aspx) so it would be pretty easy to code up a module where people request role membership and an automated mail is sent with the rsvp code if you want to cut down on the admin's workload.

This could be achieved with a relatively simple module.

I would suggest a module that holds a list of role requests - so that the admin can just click thru and approve them in a simple grid.
The action of clicking ACCEPT would handle the process of adding the user to the specified role.

Thanks for the reply. I think for now I'll just create a form which will send the request and the admin can add the user to the roles manually. In our scenario we will only get a handful of requests.
