How does the rotating image work on the getting started page?  I just installed dotnetnuke and I don't quite see how this page works?  It looks like just an HTML container with 5 images in it.  How do they rotate?

Just FYI, there are lots of ways to implement a rotator.  You can even buy special modules which make it super easy to pick images and settings that make them do what you want.

I presume you are talking about the default install of DotNetNuke?  One of the features of that skin is a particular container called "Banner" which injects the javascript to create a rotator out of the HTML if properly formed.  It even creates the menu item links at the bottom for you.

there is a jquery snippit in the skin, which references the jquery.cycle.min file, which is designed to take a html container and rotate them and has other transitions etc that you could do with it?

AFAIK the free widget suite at dnnwidgets.com includes a carousel, which might suite your needs.
