G'Day Guys,

I am new to DNN, I have inherited a site and it is version DNN 4.05.05 with 11 modules.

A couple quick questions.

1. Can I upgrade from DNN 4.05.05 to 6.01, or will I have to go through every version inbetween (which would seem an insane waste of time).

2. Has DNN ensured that it can still run older modules or will I have to go and purchase new modules?

Many thanks.

Cheers

Ian.

1. for the upgrade, you should take the path via 4.6.2, 4.9.5, 5.2.3, 5.4.4, 5.5.1 and 5.6.3, following my upgrade instructions: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/186/Default.aspx. for the final step, either choose 6.0.2 or wait for 6.1.1
2. before the upgrade, you need to make sure using latest version of all 3rd party module and its compatibilty with DNN 6.1.1

Thanks Sebastian, I appreciate the help, but I am not too impressed with DNN.

What other software makes you do 7 updates to get to the newest version?  And what other software makes old programmes that run on it obselete?  Many of the modules require a purchase, so every time I upgrade DNN I need to go and purchase modules again?  This seems to be a bit of a racket.  I inherited this project.  I need to upgrade because 4.05.05 is being hacked on a regular basis, wrecking the site and needing a restore every few weeks.

In future it would be nice if the new versions could detect the version that is being upgraded and make the transition.  This will take more than a day to upgrade, probably with many problems, which could end up taking up a week or more.  For instance, some of the modules are made by gumbosoft, they seem to have gone out of business.

The best solution may be to scrap DNN and write a new website the good old fashsion way.

Sorry for the negativity, I am just a little miffed at DNN right now.

Cheers

Ian.

Ian, if you still running Windows 3.11, you will need at least several steps for upgrading to Windows 8. DNN had at least double the number of versions released.
Same for modules: how many of your old Windows 3 software products is running on Windows 7 w/o upgrade? There are necessities to modify interfaces, forcing module developers to upgrade their software as well, in order to benefit from improvements - and of course, someone has to pay for the effort and usually it is the one who gets the benefit: a secure web site with up2date interfaces and options. Do you know, Windows 3.11 didn't support Facebook?
