This may be a dumb question that shows where the gaps in my reading are...

But is there a (relatively easy) way of moving a portal from one DNN instance either to a different existing DNN instance or to a new DNN instance?

Best regards

Dave.

Click "Host - Portals" ,then click "Export Portal Template" to save your current portal as template, then choose this file as portal template while create new portal in another dnn instance.

Note, you need make sure both dnn instance have same modules/skins installed, otherwise you may lose some data.

Hello David,

Really the best way that we have found to move a portal out is to clone the site, then delete the unwanted portals out of the installation. This does two things for you.

One, it safely migrates all your data. Since it's essentially and exact copy of what your running live at the time, all of your modules, user accounts, etc will be moved.  And two you wont have to worry if a module will work correctly or not if like you would if you use the exporting method.

Just make sure that when you have the site cloned over that you delete the portals out though your DotNetNuke administrative control panel while logged in as host. Unless you are a DBA, do not try deleting stuff directly from your database. Once that is done you should have a stand alone portal completely separate from your other installation. Then you can switch the DNS records over and go live.

Hope this helps.

Sorry I missed this - I forgot to click the "notify me on replies".

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - it looks (given that we want to keep existing data, including forum data and a fair bit more) as if Johnny Gregory's solution will work best for us.

Thanks for that, Johnny.
