I've seen multiple 3rd party modules that offer a "customize template" opportunity (either through a multiline textfield in the module's settings, or directly in a *.ascx file). Tokens can be used there. One working example is

<%=UserId%>

which, at runtime, is replaced by the actual user ID of the guy who is currently logged in and watching that page. So I'm guessing "UserId" is a well-known general token name of DNN. What other token names do exist? Is there a list somewhere? And is the syntax (see above) specific to a particular module, or is it always written like that?

Most tokens in DNN are based on their names in the DNN application framework - the tokens page in the Wiki has a list of the common tokens used in core dnn modules.  http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W...

You would need to check however on the specific list for custom modules ... - while most to use the standard dnn format - they also offen include additional custom tokens specific to the needs of the module.

please do not mix up tokens modules may provide in HTML templates and asp.net objects, which may be accessed in ASCX code or razor scripts. Tokens are usually looking like [object:property] and get replacecd using TokenReplace service. There is a shared list of tokens for module, page, site and user properties, besides modules may implement additional tokens, even objectless (e.g. [CONTENT] for modules like HTML). You need to check out each module documentation to get the full list of tokens supported.
