When someone visits my site (created with DNN 6.2.2), it is EXTREMELY slow until it's finally shown (10-15 seconds). Sometimes this delay is even repeated when the first 1-3 menus are clicked. Then, the site usually responds very fast and as expected.

When he visits the site again (let's say 1 hour later), the same effect is repeated: Extreme delay at the beginning, then it's getting better.

I suspect it has something to do with pre-compiling MSIL code, ASP.NET websites in general, caching technologies, and what not. But in the end, DNN (and probably most asp.net sites) has a problem here while competing CMSes (like Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress) obviously don't have that problem. Is there anything I can do to speed things up? It's especially annoying for first-time-visitors of the homepage - they enter the URL in their browser, don't see a website for 10-15 seconds, think the page is not existing anymore and leave.

This has to do with the fact that the AppPool is "going to sleep" after a defined idle time (20 min by default, afair).

What you can do is using some ping service (eg DNN Monitor).

Best wishes

if you are running the site on your own web server (not on shared hosting), you may disable app recycle after 20 mins of inactivity. I prefer to perform a single restart at 3am instead.
