As a beginner, after downloading the software, the two things I want to find next are (1) forum, (2) a "getting started" tutorial.  The DNN website does not make it easy to find either of these.

I gave up and used Google to find the forum(s).  Why didn't the website menu work for me?  Because the "Community" tab leads to an overwhelming number of choices. I skimmed for the word "forum", but did not notice it. Found out later that was because it was buried in a long entry "Community Forums" under "Participate" tag.  (Your website designer should Google "people don't read they skim".)

A "getting started" tutorial is even harder to find. Google helped me find http://www.dnnsoftware.com/community/learn   There is no polite way to describe this page. It is horrible. Animated scrolling lists of obscure stuff. The page goes on and on, with no overall organization. I still don't know if DNN website has anything that says "Start Here" for beginners.

I'll find out what I need. But no thanks to the organization of this website, I am sorry to say.

you are not fair, the community is happy that the forums have been re-added to the menu just 8 months after the site was relaunched.
But I agree, there is still room for improvements.

FYI we've changed the default template in 7.3.0 so that it now contains links to Q&A, blog, leaderboard, videos, shop, online help, forums, webinars and wiki (amongst others), so that post install you've a bunch of places to explore. That said that doesn't address questions pre-install think the getting started wiki page is a good point http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/page/...

I am having the problem of trying to find some kind of comprehensive developer documentation and/or programming reference (that the vast majority of other CMS solutions have).

Its frustrating as the product is looking really viable now with version 7.2 and as such I am itching to develop on it but trying to develop through trial and error is just down right stupid.

The beginners documentation that you refer to is awful but the videos are better - just need some people dedicate their time to getting the information sorted, I find it worrying that a product that has been on the market for this long still does not have some kind of organised structure to it with regards to information and guides.

The forum is active no doubt but most people will not want to refer to the forum unless its a last resort (any techie will want to try working out the product first).

there is a lot of developer Information in the wiki, but I agree that it is not suitable to get an intro.
Hopefully there will be soon a new book that includes getting started for developers.
