I'm new to DNN. (starting with 8.0)    We were thinking about Joomla, but it had so much was tied to MySQL & Linux that decided to look at DNN since we are a Windows & .Net shop.   However as of right now, pretty dissolusioned.      Just installed 8.0 (I know it's brand new)

Here is my setup

  1. Installed it ok on Win2012R2 and SQL Server 2012.     Site comes up ok.
  2. Running on vmWare guest with 4gb of memory and 4 cores using SAN storage
  3. Currently testing on Chrome

Here is my experience:

The configuration pages are REALLY slow, and when selecting a simple add a page takes about 15 seconds for the edit screen to show up.    Database profiler shows now long durations.   When closing any configuration page, it takes at least 30 seconds to return to the base page.    CPU of guest never shows more than 40% utilization

  • Looked for Announcement module.   Doesn't exist (really?, what am I missing)
  • Added 3rd party Announcement.    Doesn't work well.   Can add an announcement, but it never shows up.
  • Tried to do some basics like creating a page.    Takes 15 seconds for edit screen to show up.   (was finally able to add a page)
  • Added 2sxc content, App option shows up in add new module, but when selecting app to upload, upload was successful, but apps never show up.
  • After uploading app, return/close button doesn't work (the X at the top does work)
  • After closing, Chrome sits there waiting over 30 seconds to return.

Little frustrated with new first experience with DNN 8.0.   Any thoughts on what I'm missing or doing wrong?     Do I need to get into the code to make DNN work, or can I use the app utilizing a coder?    Should I drop back to a 7.x version?

Thanks!

Bill

I would start with DNN 7.4.2, there are a number of issues known in 8.0.0
For announcements, there are a number of modules in the store, many users are running NewsArticle from Ventrian.com (you need a cheap subscription), another option is http://www.efficionconsulting.com/Dot....
Regarding performance, it depends on your configuration. To improve database performance see my TurboDNN scripts (see signature below) and please read instructions.

Bill,

This doesn't sound like a normal DNN problem with new installs. I typically see a 1-2 second delay for some specific popups on a local dev box. I see similar speeds on add page and closing settings popups.  i suspect something else is going on - especially given your issues with 2sxc
