Hi there,

Please can you advise me on the following: I have dnn 7.4.2 site running perfectly nice. The site is small charity with few hundred members. All modules on the site are core modules (except easydnn news module used for the blog). The same site has been done with responsive design so its working perfectly well on mobiles.

Now – I would like to have android and ios app as a layer on top of the site. App(s) should have few screens (pages): home page (with list view of the content of easydnn news module, with details view when article link has been clicked), profile pages (basically dnn user profile page and pages under activity feed) and page where users will be able to add some content (basically “add post” of some sort). These content updates should be reflected on the site itself and of course sites updates on the apps.

I have read tons of material in relations with app development, but the problem is – as I haven’t actually done any apps so far with dnn – what is the best and most cost effective way to do it and what platform would be the best for it – so basically:

  • Can I build apps (android and ios) where a dnn site would be a base? (I mean basically that once user downloads the apps – he/she should be verified and ready to use these few features I have mentioned above; ie, update profile, add post…)
  • What programs/platforms you would advise me to do it with? (asking this as there will be some cost involved for having apps on stores, and somehow telerik looks promising – am I right?)
  • Does anyone knows any practical problems one can stumble upon doing the apps over dnn?
  • What would be timeframe to actually have apps into (apple and google) stores ready to be downloaded? (saying this in the way that I am doing websites for a decade now – so from technical point of view there shouldn’t be much I couldn’t understand or learn – so the critical point is actually: in what program/platform to start working this project?)

Thank you for any advice.

Regards,

Tim

Hi,

My answers to your questions as below.

Can I build apps (android and ios) where a dnn site would be a base? (I mean basically that once user downloads the apps – he/she should be verified and ready to use these few features I have mentioned above; ie, update profile, add post…)

Yes you can.

What programs/platforms you would advise me to do it with? (asking this as there will be some cost involved for having apps on stores, and somehow telerik looks promising – am I right?)

Go for Hybrid apps. Ionic framework and AngularJS is easy to get started.

Does anyone knows any practical problems one can stumble upon doing the apps over dnn?

usually we create web service to interact with DNN DB. So as such no problems comes. But depends on situations and specs.

What would be timeframe to actually have apps into (apple and google) stores ready to be downloaded? (saying this in the way that I am doing websites for a decade now – so from technical point of view there shouldn’t be much I couldn’t understand or learn – so the critical point is actually: in what program/platform to start working this project?)

In google play just one day. It becomes live in 4 to 6 hours ideally. In Apple store it takes 2 to 4 weeks. Minimum 2 weeks as apple check code and they are very picky while approving.

Just go for hybrid apps i suggest as thats simple to use and based on HTML, CSS and Javascript knowledge.

Thanks,

Varun
