For various reasons we have been asked to prevent users sharing their login details. We have already built a front end login system but we need to know if the user logging in is already logged in. Is there a list available from the DNN api which lists the users currently logged in. If not how can we test if a user is already logged in and logging in again?

I have worked on a similar requirement in the past (over a year ago) but not too much has changed. The basic implementation I worked on utilized the core built in Users Online and required changes to the authentication provider (ie. create your own which it seems like you have done already). I can't remember if I had to update anything with Users Online but I do know you need to make sure it is enabled on your install.

This is not something that is a trivial task, as already logged in is a bit hard to pinpoint.  DNN does contain a "users online" functionality, but honestly it isn't reliable, and you have to be sure that all of your use cases are covered so that you don't accidentally lock out a user that shouldn't be.

I personally if going to implement this would make a few changes to the core to get it done, to be 100% sure that I knew the "last activity" date of the user, then use my own reporting information to determine if they were still online.

You then have the option of "should they be able to kick off" the other user?
