Hey folks

Got a site here which needs some SEO, but I'm rather new to doing this for DNN.
First question I got is what happens with the pages' keywords?

Take these page settings:
Name/title: Ouderinfotheek
Description: In onze ouderinfotheek vind u verscheidene documenten terug.
Keywords: Ouderinfotheek Ouder Infotheek VCOV Download Documenten

Google:
 Search term
Result

ouderinfotheek
Rank 1
Good
ouder infotheek
Nowhere to be found
Bad

All I did was add a space in between the 2 words. Not to mention, both words are available seperately in the keywords.

Keywords are considered to be not as important as in days gone past - apparently Google does not even use them at all when ranking.

I would check out some of the SEO-dedicated forums though as this is not really DNN-specifically and you might find more accurate advice regarding SEO there (there's some great SEO resources).

Page Titles and Descriptions are very important, and of course your content. Links and anchor text linking to that content is important too. Check out Google Sitemaster tools to see how, where and why your site is being indexed...

Rodney is correct in that the meta keywords make no difference to ranking because they are easily abused.

If 'ouderinfotheek' is actually two words ; order infotheek then the best strategy for gaining ranking for those words is to separate them in the Url.  If your page Url looks something like ouderinfotheek.aspx then it's difficult for search engines to parse out the separate words.  You should change the Page Url to ouder-infotheek.aspx in order to get better rankings on those keywords.  Note this *may* have a detrimental affect on your #1 ranking for ouderinfotheek - I don't know the language/keywords to fully understand.  You can get around this by ensuring some good quality external links, some of which use 'ouderinfotheek' and some which use 'ouder infotheek' as the anchor text.

if you need to treat multiple words as one in url, use underscore to merge them: "Ouder_info_theek" search engines will treat this as a special word instead of seperated words. If you want to play safe, use a dash - It is the safest way to do it.

Thanks,
George
