Is there anything known about the limits of the DNN search engine.
We currently have about 70.000 items in the searchitems table.
And this results in about 3.200.000 items in searchitemwords, and about 7.800.000 items in the searchitemwordpostion table.

So when we use the search engine, it results in a lot of timeouts.
Are there any statistics about when to look for an alternative?

Marnix, please clear the search tables (see http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/134/Default.aspx), there have been DNN versions, where searchitemwords table created duplicate entries on every run.

Yes, I know, but in this case it is just a large portal. It's got a custom module with a lot of content in it, and it appears on every portal (about 75 portals). So the index should actually be really big. But I want to know if we should still be using the DNN search engine, or if it would be better to look for a third party solution.

k, with this size you might consider using a more professional search engine, e.g. based on lucene or MS index server. There are a few modules on Snowcovered and even free ones available, AFAIR. You may even consider using google domain search, but this will include public content only.
