I just got my site up and running (magneticwellnessstore.com). It was drastically slow initially but it completely shut down the moment I started driving traffic to it. Its on a brand new server and I dont understand what in the DNN application the problem lies. Are all DNN sites this slow?? If someone could please shed some light on what the problem is I would greatly appreciate it. Here is the server info....

Server specs.

Server 2008 RC1

Dual Core 3.2Gig Intel CPU
2 Gigs RAM
SATA 3.0 (160 GB) HDD

SQL 2008 RC1 Standard

Please help!

Vess,
it is very strange to see a SQL Server 2008 release candidate being installed. Anyhow, 2 GB RAM might be a bit small for a web server with SQL server, which uses RAM heavily for caching. Please check resource utilization in task manager, if there is a lot of paging, this might be an issue (e.g. SQL server eating up all memory). Another problem might be frequent app pool recycle, please check Windows eventlog for associated activities during startup. Another cause could be an application error, check task manager for dw20.exe showing up.

Cheers from Germany,

Firstly no - have a look at www.dotnetnuke.com - its a good reference point to minimum performance your site should deliver.

For a server running IIS and MS SQL you would normally need 4gig of ram - ms sql will use as much ram as it can possibly get hold of.

However - having said this - by chance do you happen to have AVG installed on the server - it is known to cause serious performance issues with asp.net applications - particularly forcing the applications to restart continually.

 Wes,

Do you know if any or all free anti-virus software cause serious performance issues? Do you know if Avast is any better?

Thanks,
Jenny

I have dedicated server with win 2008 standard, celeron cpu, 1 GRAM, MS SQL 2008 express and it will working great.

Suggest the following:

  • Yes remove ALL ANTI-VIRUS programs, especially the bundled windows defender!, the latter killed my site & caused all sorts or errors.

  • Upgrade to 5.6.2 (this version has enhanced performance big time)
  • If you have one Portal per installation, remove the default.css and portal.cs files and merge the used css classes in skin.css and remove the reference to default.css and portal.css in default.aspx.vb
  • There is an add-on for Firefox dustme it will tell you which css classes are not used, remove any css class not used,  but be CAREFUL, test your site after every removal and do BACKUPS ALWAYS.
  • Remove all unused modules, you can always reinstall them, when you need them

  • If you have third party modules, check if there is any issues with them.
  • Use google hosted jquery , update the url with the latest jquery version (from the host account). Having your content on content delivery networks (like goole) will enhance page load for web visitors (you may not necessary notice it), plus many sites are using google hosted jquery, so it will be already cached.

  • Cleanup your config.web for any unused providers and features, for example  i will never use the CAPTCHA or DNN search provider (I am using google custom search) , so I removed

you may check  my website and see it for yourself

This page has the standard  DNN repository module:

This page has the standard  DNN Form and list module:

Once again  BACKUP,  BACKUP & BACKUP

I would love to receive your feedback on how you find the performance and what I have mentioned above.

All the best.
