I am working on a DNN installation that was running a bit slow (blamed it on godaddy) and I just added a new portal to it.  This went slow but all was working, but the site started to slow down to the point of being unusable (couldn't edit), then would speed back up again. I started suspecting a bad skin file and after deleting it and some unused modules, the site has just about stalled. The new portal will come up, but I cannot log in - I get this "The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression."

I had turned on the Gzip compression as I thought that would help the slow issues - didn't seem to make a difference at the time.  In desperation now, thinking it would help, I put "false" for the compression string in the web.config - <urlCompression doStaticCompression="false" doDynamicCompression="false" />.  This hasn't helped either.

I have worked on about 20 DNN sites and all have run great - even on godaddy.  I have no idea what is wrong with this one as I am using all the same modules, versions etc. and I build all my skins in Artisteer.  Never had any problems til now.

This site is for a festival that is now open for registration and HAS to be up and functioning ASAP.  Please help!

you need access to the database to alter the compression setting (in HostSettings table) - and never use multiple compression options together or compression with whitespace filter enabled.

Thanks Sebastian! That's what I get for not getting to the heart of the problem and just assuming it was a hosting issue.  I somehow got a corrupt skin file I think and deleting the old skin file allowed me to log in to the site to change the performance settings to precisely what all my other sites are set to.. It ran great after this, but now is acting a bit funky again - works snappy until I do anything with skin or extensions.  I am building the new portal so had to make a change to the skin and re-upload (repair) it and now the site is crawling again.  It will slowly get faster until it is almost normal if it does what it has been doing.  Any ideas on a fix?  Do I still need to go into the database to do what you suggested above?

Thanks so much for all the help you give!

if you regained access to host settings module in DNN you don't need to alter the value in the database any longer. if there are issues with the skin, you need to fix it - check for interfering Javascript and try turning off widget support in Site Settings (admin menu).

PS: I always test a new skin on a single page (other than the home page) first.
