Hi,

we're thinking about introducing a staging environment. But before we upgrade to Enterprise I got a couple of questions...
In the current portal (5.6.2 Pro) there are heaps of custom modules, none of them supports the IPortable interface, yet.
The data is stored in a separate database, as well as the links to all item related documents and pictures, which are sitting in the filesystem.
On top we're using a 3rd party Module DigArticle which doesn't support IPortable either.

1. Do I just need to implement the IPortable interface to the custom modules in order to have staging working?
1.1. If so, how do I deal with the ModuleID? In the portal a module is usually just used once, just a couple are used at different pages
   1.2. How do i get/set the ModuleID?
2. Will the staging mechanism take care of all documents in the file system?
3. How is it accomplished that just the change set will be transferred (files and folders as well as modules and settings)?
4. The settings of the 3rd party module will be synchronized by the staging mechanism but the data needs to be added manually?

Thanks Olaf

AFAIK content staging relies on iPortable, i.e. modules not supporting this interface may fail. 1. ModuleID is created by DotNetNuke and you should not touch it. in you module, you may obtain it via modulesettings or moduleinfo object. 2. if you support iPortable, the moduleID might change and you need to adjust data accordingly, when storing your objects, if settings or data needs to store moduleId explicitely. 2. AFAIK yes, but I am not sure, whether links using fileId will be adjusted automatically. 3. AFAIK this is handled using a timestamp. 4. the module needs to support iportable to transfer content automatically.

Does "...modules not supporting this interface may fail..." mean they won't be synchronized at all?
Regarding my second question, who can tell me if files and folders will be synchronized? Is there a configuration file where I can specify every single directory that needs to be checked?
How is the staging mechanism basically triggered? Is there a button like "Stage Now"
Just curios about the implementation of a workflow

Cheers Olaf
