a skin is displaying a page, while a container holds the modules placed on it.
If you want to edit page elements like menu, login, copyright note or the columns to hold modules, you need to edit the skin. If you would adjust, how a single module is displayed (border, title, background etc) you should edit the container. If you use skin sets, consisting of skin(s) and container(s), they may share skin.css file for their style settings.

Yes, the container and skin relationship is confusing to me.

QUESTION:

If I wanted to add another pane (maybe one above the socialmedia pane), would I do that in the skin or in the container?

AFTER I change it and save it as a different name, can I use that skin (or container) with the normal DNN skin (or container) that I did NOTchange?

I mean if I change DarkKnight Home Standard menu skin and save it as  to Joel-skin, then can I still use the DarkKnight Banner Container  withit?

However it seems in some case you do not even need a container with a skin???????

Obviously I need to read some more documentation!!!!!!!

THANKS for your help, DNN is GREAT!!!!!!

Joel,
panes (to hold modules on the page) are defined within the page skin.
if you duplicate DarkKnight_Home_Standard_menu.ascx to Joe_ Skin.ascx, you may apply this skin to a test page and will be able to use any of the containers on the page. you should always use a container (even a plain one) to control position of the manage menu, although there is an option in module settings to hide the container for non-editor users.
