What exactly does Display Module On All Pages do?

Please help, with this question about HTML Module content sharing.

It seems to me that this setting...

> Edit Page, > Settings, > Module Settings, > Advanced Settings, > Display Module on All Pages

...will actually create an individual INSTANCE of the given Module and place that INSTANCE on each page; that is, it will NOT show a COPY of the given module on each page.

Note that I make this claim because I put a module on my Home page, I set Display Module on All Pages to Checked, I then saw the module on other pages, but when I deleted the module from the Home page I noticed that did NOT delete the Module from the other pages.

Is my understanding correct here?

Please advise.

Joseph is right, you first have to uncheck the "Display on all pages" checkbox, then you can delete it.

What it does exactly is: It places the same instance of the module (and not a copy!) on all pages, the content and the module settings are the same everywhere. Technically spoken, you get a record in the TabModules tables for each page with the same module ID, but different page IDs (TabID). The Module Settings are the same for all of these, but not the TabModule Settings, which can differ. That allows you for example to use different containers or place the module in different panes depending on the page.
