Hi everyone.  I know the Master/Subcalender thing is kind of confusng (not to mention difficult to implement).  I've been thinking a lot about eliminating the infinite drilldown in favor of a single level...in other words you would still be able to add a single level or add several calendars to another's display.

Example: you have several calendar's events you would like to display overlayed on the main calendar...for example a division calendar could contain all departments (but if the departments contained sectional calendars, they would not display on the division).

This would put the event calendar more inline w/MS Outlook and other Event/Calendaring software and would make the code more manageable...

Is this acceptable?  How much pain does this cause everyone?  Feedback?

thanks!

I would just like the "Master/Subcalender thing" to work, how it is implemented is not important.  It would seem that it doesn't work in its current form, so maybe what you propose is better (as long as it works).

What causes pain is the need for this capability and not having it.  And the implication that this function is currently built in, but it doesn't work.

Ideally, I need the calender view and the list view to be available on the same page but in different containers.

We have some great new features in the works, including a better performing Calendar/Sub-Calendar feature (and List View).  An Calendar can now include other Site Event Calendar instances.   However, this feature will no longer support unlimited Calendar -> Sub-Calendar -> Sub-Sub-Calendar) recursion...  This was very difficult to support and created a lot of performance headaches.  But, you will be able to display several other Event Calendars on the site on a new Calendar Instance and this will work consistently  on the Month, Week, or List views.   Also, you will be able to set which view is the "Default View" for the instance.

So, to sum:  You will be able to drop 2 calendar instances on the same page...set one to Month View (to display the Month) and the other calendar instance to the List View and point it at the first Calendar Instance, in order to have both views visible on the same page.

Alan:

Hi.  I realize that I'm a little late to the party on this question, but we use the multiple level feature in our calendar and love it.  We have subdepartment calendars cascading into the department calendar, which cascades into the organization calendar.  It works well.  For what it's worth, I would hate to see that feature removed.

See Ya,

Van.  I know this was a unique feature of the Event Calendar.  There was no other calendar that I know of that implemented this.  This was, I believe for good reason.  We implemented the feature in the UI and Business Layers of the module and it made much of the code very difficult to deal with.  What we really want to do is support this at the Database Layer, in order to improve performance and support...SQL Server 2005 has the ability to support unlimited recursion which would make this very easy to implement.  However, as a DotNetNuke Module, we cannot rely on SQL Server being the only database we support (DNN uses the DB Provider model to support other types of Databases.  Also, we are being asked to implement more features and frequent releases  Therefore the decision was made to rollback this feature, until we can support this in the Database.
