It would be interresting to decide if a category is applyed to the current module or the current portal. I think it's not possible actualy and it's a problem in my case.
Do you consider this feature in the future version please ?

A category is defined on a PORTAL level, NOT on a module instance level. This is basically needed for the possibility for master/child event calendars.

Would a solution be possible where the use of categories could be restricted for master calendars while child calendars would inherit the categories of their parents.

I envision a situation where I make many parent calendars, one for sports activities, one for ceremonies, one for parties, one for holidays. These calendars are visible only by the staff members who have the authority to add/change events in the intended category.

I also have all my calendar modules in 2 versions for each of the languages available on the portal. Short of providing localization possibilities, categories could be limited per module based on the selected language.

Just a suggestion for future improvements. Categories can still exist portal-wide, but the administrator should have the ability to limit the categories available to the account that adds/edits the event in a given module.

Where modules offer the option to filter on categories, the categories that are available to the editor of that module and those of the parent modules should be available.

Maybe I should explain you the scenario a little better. In my user roles, I have next to roles as translator, forum moderator, repository moderator, also roles as sportsevent editor, ceremonyeventeditor, holidayevent editor... These roles get access to a page, hidden and inaccessible for other users. On this page, each role sees only his calendar for a given language.

On the other hand, the home page also has a calendar in list view. It has many of those little calendars, but based on one's user role anyone will only see one of those calendars. Each calendar is a different combination of master calendars. Students and staff would see a calendar that includes holidays for instance, while unregistered users would see a calendar without the holidays (yet with the sports events, always good publicity)

There could be more calendars scattered around the website.

Sportevent editors should not per mistake be allowed to add events under the category "Ph.D. thesis presentation" for instance.

This is a scenario that is more likely to occur when the users are larger organizations with separate people responsible for different types of events.

Think of it: if you want to apply the parent/child logic systematically, inheritance of the categories is the only logical way. You should also consider it in regard to locations (for ML purpose)

Hi Marc,

There are requirements on CodePlex looking for a change in how categories work. Can I request that you add your suggestions to those so we can track them.

Thanks
Roger
