I have two questions about the iCAL export data.

First is the Location.
What I see for location is the description followed by a dash and then the URL for the location.  I thought the URL would be a hyperlink for the description or would not be displayed.  When the URLs are displayed they are quite long not usable.  Is there a template that I could change to remove the URL from the export?

Second is the Name.
For Google calendar that is not a problem because it's name is initially the URL and I can change that to anything I like.  For the Cozi calendar it's name is EventVCal.  That name appears to be taken from the URL.  I believe this will be cumbersome for users that use more than one DNN Events Calendar.  Is there a way to pass the Name in the export data or change the name in the URL?

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,

Currently the iCal is not templated. If you post a request on CodePlex we can investigate for a future release.

For the name, do you mean the file name (which I think is the module name) or the event name?

Just looking at this one some more. So for location, the RFC5545 spec only supports plain text in the Location attribute of a VEVENT (not 100% true, but not sure how many iCal consumers take notice of ALTREP). So this isn't an HTML field in which a hyperlink can be included. Consequently I added the url to the text included in teh attribute so it was specified in the 'right' place.

Not sure what Google Calendar does with it as to how it is displayed, but in Oulook it is displayed in the Location of the event. I typically include the top leveldomain url which is quite short, but can imagine people deep linking may have long urls.

Looks like someone proposed a change to RFC2445 wihich is an old version of the iCal spec, to include VVENUE which would have handled this, but it doesn't look like that has been adopted into the spec.

Happy to take some thoughts on this one.

Roger

For the Name, I must be talking about the file name.  I believe this issue really is with the way that other calendars are determining the name of the iCAL when it is not in the export data.  Taking it from the URL is always going to be a shortcoming.

I have done some investigating and found it can be included in the export data.  For example, here is an Google iCAL:

BEGIN:VCALENDAR
PRODID:-//Google Inc//Google Calendar 70.9054//EN
VERSION:2.0
CALSCALE:GREGORIAN
METHOD:PUBLISH
X-WR-CALNAME:TROOP 88
X-WR-TIMEZONE:America/New_York
BEGIN:VTIMEZONE
...

Notice this export data has a calendar name of "TROOP 88" identified by the X-WR-CALNAME label.  Adding and calendar name to the export data for the DNN Events module would solve this problem.

Here is an example of an event with a Location taken from the DNN Event iCAL:

BEGIN:VEVENT
UID:DNNEvent00883347517@wbshooting.gahart.myddns.com

I will add a request to CodePlex to see about elminating the log URL that are added to the location description.  This causes both the detail and tooptip display of the these calendars to be very difficult to read.

Thanks,
Greg

Both requests are included in Events 6.0.0 which will require DNN 6.1.2 minimum.
