Hello, everyone. I've been a web developer for about 3 years now, primarily as a PHP developer and not as much on the .NET side of things. I've been working with DotNetNuke for about 4 weeks now in a local development environment.

I've managed to go through Chris Hammond's Module Development walkthrough, and I feel ready to approach module development. My task is to explore DNN's extensibility with custom solutions, whether through creating modules from scratch or extending the functionality of existing modules. Specifically, I was told to look into adding features to the Events/Calendar module.

What do you guys recommend as far as how to approach this best? Is there a way to create a module and tell it to inherit from the Events module entirely, then apply the additional functionality, or would a better approach be to completely copy the source code and modify it directly? Or is it simpler to just start from scratch, using the Events source as inspiration?

Hi Justin,

I'm not sure I can advise on inheritance as to whether that is possible or not. As to whether you should start from scratch or re-use depends on how closely the module aligns with your needs. There are a couple core controls you can use (in the month and week views), but they supply no business layer or data access layer logic, they are pure presentation layer.

The module is now quite complex, and we go through periods of consolidation and simplification, but there are many configuration options with the complexity of logic which goes with that.

Not sure how to answer beyond that...

Thanks, Roger. That's actually very helpful. As I mentioned, I'm not really that experienced with .NET development to begin with, but I could tell the module was pretty complex, and your confirmation that it isn't easily extended saves me a lot of time in trying (and explaining to my boss).

I'm thinking a better solution for us would be to purchase a pre-built module that closely fits our needs.

Thanks again.

Yep, always better to buy if you can get an 80% match, and adapt your process for the 20%, than to build from scratch/adapt.
