I forget where the default comes from (I think I have tried to find out before and got lost). I know that bugs have been raised on dnn core before in this area, but they should have been fixed by now. It should be coming from host or portal admin.

Sorry, but I simply don't get to look at code these days, I don't have time. The problem is this is a complex area, and I feel responsibility here. In the events module we could potentially add some defensive code (it may even be there) but it needs to fallback to a time zone from somewhere, but it is probably the one that the user accounts are defaulting to...

Sebastian is probably able talk to how the user default tone zone is created...

Roger,

No worries. It does default to user timezone and then module (the events are all in the East and the server is sitting in the West, three time zones away...

I could probably get it to default to Module time zone and the errors would go away, however that's masking the issue...

Note: since DNN 6, DNN uses PreferredTimezone user Profile property, which is a Windows Timezone, identified by Name.
"Timezone" property with Offset to UTC in minutes is only provided for backwards compatibility.
Roger, did you Switch to Windows Timezones in Events module?

Sebastian - for getting the list of time zones to populate the module time zone control, and to retrieve DST settings from I used windows time zones, I forget the specific api calls but I can look it up. So if the user is being populated with a time zone Id that doesn't match one available to the system I think you would get this error. Of course it could be that the system was set up using a time zone that is no longer available in windows. So we'd need to think of some logic to handle this...

I think that the Events module is doing it correctly, what I am seeing is that a newly registered user's time zone is stored in the UTC format name and not the friendly Name. Only when the profile is Updated that the property value is changed to the friendly name and the issue goes away...
