I followed these steps:
  1. Backup Database, Backup All Files (in case for recovery)
  2. Rename web.config -> oldweb.config
  3. Extract DNN4.5 installation files over current installation (overright if file exists)
  4. Delete web.config, Rename release.config -> web.config
  5. Open web.config and oldweb.config in Text Editor (VS2005 prefer)
  6. Copy "SiteSqlServer" line under <connectionStrings> from old to new
  7. Copy "SiteSqlServer" line under <appSettings> from old to new
  8. Copy "InstallationDate" line under <appSettings> from old to new
  9. Copy "machineKey" line under <system.web> from old to new
  10. Browser the web, it will automatically upgrade
Now I get:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

first, if you read the error message, it says 'something went wrong but I'm not going to tell you what went wrong until you change a setting in the web.config file"

so, change the web.config file as directed,. <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".  then you will be able to see the error and that should help you figure out what went wrong.

Also, what version are you upgrading from?  to?   it looks like you're upgrading to 4.5?  or did you mean 5.4?

I'm upgrading from 05.02.00 (275) to 5.4.2
Those notes were directions I got from this website.
I tried changing the <customErrors> tag.

My real questions is - Are the steps I'm taking the right one to upgrade?
And - Why is there an upgrade version of DNN, if the instructions say to use the new install files?

Thanks,
Reddirt

Here's the steps I take to upgrade (may not work for everyone or anyone for that matter!):

!Important! When they say backup your files and database they are serious!

1. Backup Database
2. Backup Files
3. Unzip Upgrade to any directory
4. Copy and paste or FTP the upgrade files over top your existing site
5. Browse to http://yourwebsite/Install/Install.aspx?mode=upgrade
6. Watch the upgrade proceed, notice any errors, if none then you're good to go

There is no need to rename or edit your web.config file, the upgrade process does it for you.

That should be it! Quite simple once you have it down.

Good luck!

you do not need browsing to http://yourwebsite/Install/Install.aspx?mode=upgrade, unless you switched autoupgrade to false in your web.config (which is suggested, if you are unable to stop your site during the upgrade process).
