My DNN installation is in desperate need of upgrading.

Techy people, I hear you ask why have I waited so long. Truth is every time I have looked into it I couldn't find an idiots - step by step guide. All of the documentation assumes I'm an expert in DNN. I have gone round and round in circles in forums and on websites and can't find clear instructions.

Could some very kind person with 5 minutes to spare please give me a step by step guide for beginners?

I have backed up the database and made a copy of all the files on the site in preparation.

How do I then upgrade then restore the database? What do I do if some of the modules no longer work?

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help.

Unfortunately, upgrading to DNN 5 is still not an easy task there are still a number of upgrade issues to be fixed - one main reason for me, still running all our and our clients sites on 4.9.5

I would be happy to just upgrade to 4.9.5 because my site was recently hacked. But upgrading just confuses me, and I don't have the knowledge to set up a local site for testing. http://www.dotnetnukedocs.com/Home/topic/DotNetNukeUpgrades.aspx#older This link gives some instructions but seem very basic. At least I know now just to try for 4.9.5. Thanks.

Gillian, you may follow my upgrade check list: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/AboutDotnetNuke/V3V4TippsTricks/Upgradedurchführen.aspx Please be aware, that you need to upgrade in 2 steps, I suggest via 4.6.2, where the first step requires adopting web.config manually, while the upgrade processor of later versions will take care of it. Make sure to start with a full backup of all files and the database!!! Good luck!
