I have tried this now 5 or 6 times with the same issue. Initial install is completed using the Web Platform Installer everything runs correclty.

as soon as I upgrade I get a security error and the site will not load.

Details are Windows Server 2008 R2 - MS SQL 2008 Express. everthing fully patched. to latest versions.

Please post the text of the security error as there are many potential security/permissions errors.

Since your DNN installation is running under Windows Server 2008 R2 (IIS 7.5), it is quite likely that the ASP.Net worker process account for the AppPool to which the site is assigned has not been granted full permissions on all folders including the site root folder. Here's a helpful article which explains the unique Application Pool Identity account and how to add it to a folder's access control list: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/624/ap...

On the other hand, the security error may be in reference to not being able to connect to the database which might have been caused by using the install rather than upgrade package or attempting to manually modify the site's web.config.

thanks VERY much really useful information - Seems that adding "IIS AppPool\DefaultAppPool" to the folder permissions has cracked this once and for all!

I have set this for my vhosts folders so that all new websites I create are setup correctly irrespective of which pool they are run under.
