Hi Guys,

We have made few custom changes to the DNN core code [like changing method accessor from private to public etc...] that is provided, to suit our need. Our current version of DNN is 5.2.0 and want to upgrade to DNN 5.5.0.

I haven't done any DNN upgrade in past and you can tag me as a newbie to DNN with moderate knowledge in few areas.

What's the best way I should proceed replacing our code of 5.2.0 to 5.5.0. Will just dumping 5.5.0 on top of 5.2.0 work? Is there any other better way to get it done?

Thanks,

Nimesh

On any upgrade the exist files are overridden with the new one.  About changes to any providers I suggest to make a own provider and package with your own provider name.

Otherwise you have re-added your code after upgrade.

modifying DNN core code is not recimmended, as you will need to apply your changes to any new version after upgrade, even most experts try to avoid it. Like Matthias pointed out, the preferred method would be copying the function into your own namespace and call it instead.

Hi,

K, Imagine that I have reverted back the core DNN code to what it was in 5.2.0. Now, if I want to upgrade the code base to DNN 5.5.0, what is the best way to do that? Should I use Upgrade package, should I use install package, or should I just get the latest DNN 5.5.0 source and dump the files over the existing DNN 5.2.0?

Thanks,

Nimesh

if you were using source package (and want to continue using source (not recommended on production sites), use source package for upgrading, you need to copy over Telerik.dll afterwards. Otherwise just unzip upgrade package into the DNN website folder, overwriting all existing files and trigger upgrade by calling your home page. Make sure to start with a full backup of files AND database!
