Hi all,

Just as the title suggests I am looking for help on how to upgrade to the latest version from 04.09.04. I know I will have to go through a few versions and keep updating my web.config file. I just need clarification/confirmation on what versions and in what aorder I need to upgrade to to get to the latest version.

Thanks.

I recommend . . .

  1. backup your site files and database and verify that you have good backups of each.
  2. upgrading DotNetNuke from 04.09.04 to 04.09.05
  3. verifying (and upgrading as necessary) that the server's application pool is running under ASP.Net 3.5 SP1 and that the MS SQL database is SQL Server 2005 or 2008 (Standard or Express). When upgrading database server  from SQL Server 2000, don't forget to change the database's compatibility mode from 80 (SQL 2000) to either 90 or 100 for SQL Server 2005 or 2008 respectively.
  4. upgrading the XML module to latest release if it is installed.
  5. uninstalling the Chat module.
  6. upgrading iFinity URL Master to latest release if it is installed.
  7. upgrade Gallery module to 04.03.02 Beta if it is installed.
  8. contacting vendors of any third-party extensions to check if they need to be upgraded before proceeding
  9. obtain another backup of site files and database
  10. upgrade DotNetNuke from 04.09.05 to 05.05.01
  11. upgrade Events module to 05.01.04 if it is installed as well as other modules to latest versions.

Note that at no time do you need to manually update your web.config file. Since DNN version 4.06.02, all updates of web.config are done automatically. Use the DotNetNuke UPGRADE package which does not contain a web.config file when upgrading.

Thanks for the very comprehensive upgrade path. Also glad to thear that I don't need to manually upgarde the web.config file anymore (One job I used to hate) Looks like it's going to be a long night tonight, but well worth it.

Thanks for the info, site upgrade went a bit wrong, but this was a stupid mistake on my part. I hope to be able to fix this then update as per your instructions.

Thanks

Bill,

This is great stuff! This is something I have been fighting with for a couple of weeks in my own environments. (Thank goodness for test environments!) I will follow your recipe and see what my results are.

This should be flagged for easy reading Forum Admins!
