Hi,
We have an application which we developed a way back using 4.3.4, in that application we have added out own container, skins, DesktopModules, Portal. I mean we used dotnetnuke framework and over that framework we developed application, which means adding sql data as well as some of the settings.
Now we are planning to move to latest DNN i.e. 5.5.1.
I started this migration and copied my custmized files and folders to the new version of DNN. While i started to un the script i got failures stating column does not exists.
Few errors which i list here are like
Invalid column name 'PortalName', Description. in portals
Invalid column name 'SkinRoot', SkinType in Skins  ( I found for this that i need to insert record in SkinPackage Tables).

It seems Package is new introduction in the new version (So can i consider that earlier the function of portal is moved to package?)

There are various other errors as well of column mismatch.
Can you suggest the best approach to move application from older version to new version?
Any kind of help will be really appreciated.

Thanks,
Divyesh Shah

With DNN you don't move an old application to a new one as such, you upgrade your old application by upgrading the DNN part of it.

Can you create a test portal alias in your current instance, then back everything up: database and folders, restoring them to a new IIS site that you can access via the new test portal that you created earlier.

Once you have done that use Will Strohl's upgrade path blog post http://www.willstrohl.com/Blog/EntryI... to find out which version you need to upgrade to first (looks like it should be 4.3.7).  Download the 4.3.7 upgrade package from the right hand box at codeplex (http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/releas...).

Unzip the files over your new test folders and then save a copy of release.config to release.config.saved, update release.config file with any changes that you have made to web.config.  Rename web.config to web.config.saved, and then rename release.config to web.config  Now go visit your new test site and see what errors it throws.  Fix the errors/rerun then move on to the next release in Will's blog.

Once you reach 4.6.2 onwards the web.config merges are done by DNN when you kick off the upgrade, but in all cases make sure that you back up site and database before you start.
