Hi Chaps

I've just tried to upgrade my DNN site from 4.9.5 to 5.6.0. And the upgrade crashed and I'm now trying to return my site back to 4.9.5.

Some of the errors I've encountered seem to be because "Telerik.Web.UI.dll" was not in the bin folder, and then there were problems with version numbers in the web.config.

My question, having looked at the full install package, this DLL seems to be in the right location and I know the web.config is okay, because I used it to try to rescue my site. So why can't I use the full install package when updating an existing site (of course web.config needs updating), especially as modules are not updated by the upgrade package.

I seem to remember doing this with 4.9.? and it was fine, but all posts about 5.x say to use upgrade only... WHY?

PS. Has anybody upgrade from 4.9.5 to 5.6.0 without issues?
Cheers

Steve

I am not a DNN expert, but let me help you out. The real experts may correct my suggestions, but I believe the following information may help you through your problems.

The upgrade package only overwrites files that have been changed. The install package overwrites all files. The main issue is of course the web.config file. When upgrading from 4.9.5, you do not need to edit release.config anymore to create the new web.config..DNN will do that automatically.  I think this change came in DNN 4.6.2 or something like that - long before 4.9 anyway.

There is however an upgrade path you should follow. More information about that can be found here: http://www.willstrohl.com/Blog/EntryI...

You will alse have to upgrade some modules in between these upgrade steps, the html module for instance. Furthermore, remember that the minimum requirements have changed: you will need at least SQL 2003 and .Net Framework 3.5 SP1.

If you have an issue with the Telerik.Web.UI dll, you may have to look for those dlls in an included zip file or from the install package, but I think when you follow the upgrade path, you will not encounter that issue.

Marc is correct, the upgrade package avoids the risk of overwriting files from a previous install e.g web.config/database.mdb etc. The wiki has some notes on this - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/tabid/1409/Page/Packages/Default.aspx . As for the telerik issue, it is annoying, but using the suggested upgrade paths does seem to resolve it (it's a timing/asp.net issue so does not always occur)
