It is my understanding that changes would be made automatically to the web.config file above 4.6.2 - but I've upgraded 4.6.5 -> 5.4.4 -> 5.6.3.

I see between some versions there are changes, but I'd say not all changes have been made, as there are still references to dotnet v2, etc.

So my question is - what changes do I need to make between versions?

Thanks-

since 4.6.2 DotNetNuke will automatically merge config changes e.g. you just overwrite the existing site with the upgrade package and it will merge in the relevant changes. In addition, since early 5.x versions DotNetNuke will automatically detect if a site changes it's .net version (e.g. from 2.0 to 4.0) and update the web.config accordingly. If your site has the necessary permissions (e.g. write permissions to the web.config) you should have no changes to make.

During upgrade from 4.9.5 -> 5.4.4 my web.conig file has

<controls>
<add tagPrefix="asp" namespace="System.Web.UI" assembly="System.Web.Extensions, Version=1.0.61025.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" />
</controls>

But the release.config has:
<controls>
        <add tagPrefix="asp" namespace="System.Web.UI" assembly="System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>
        <add tagPrefix="asp" namespace="System.Web.UI.WebControls" assembly="System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>
      </controls>

Which looks to me like the control should have been upgraded to use .net 3.5 version.  Or am I reading that incorrectly?

Other lines in the web.config were updated, so I think my permissions are good.  Should the updae remove any lines, or will it just comment them out if they are no longer valid?

Thanks-

yes, as DotNetNuke 5.2.0 and above require asp.net 3.5SP1 we merge those settings in -please check and make sure you've installed .net 3.5sp1 (and check your admin->event viewer, you may see an item saying that we were unable to make the changes as you were not running that version)

On my server I have ASP.NET 2,3,3.5, & 4 installed.  But my available web service extensions are limited to v2.0.50727 and 4.0.30319.

I have the DNN website set for v4 assuming above 3.5 sp1 was the requirement.

Do I have to use v3.5 sp1, or is v4.0 ok?

Thanks-
