I just started at a company and I need to update their website to the latest DNN version.

The previous IT administrator didnt bother to do any sort of updates hence the website is currently on V4.2.2.

I have roughly about 5000 users registered on my database and dont want to lose this information. Please can you tell me if there's a way of updating the website to the latest version of DNN or not without losing any data?

At first you have to do a complete backup of all your DNN files and a Database backup to be sure you could restore all your data.

You should done your upgrade on several steps of the DNN Versions.  I remember that anyone had write an article or blog about the upgrade of old instances.  But I didn't know the link yet.

If there are 3rd party modules in use of the instance check by the vendor if you have upgrade those modules before upgrading DNN.

1. Make backup of everything
2. Follow recommended upgrade path: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/Suggested_Upgrade_Path.aspx

For versions prior to 4.62 you have to manually merge your web.config with new web.config from upgrade package. Starting from 4.62 you can just upload upgrade package and make upgrade in semi-automatic mode.
