I am posting this in case it helps someone.

1) I have a working DotNetNuke site at "Domain.com"

2) I move it to a new server. However I want to test the move so I put it on "Domain2.com"

3) I update the PortalAlias and add "Domain2.com"

4) The site works, but when I click login the page refreshes but I am not "logged in" (my username does not show and I have no abilities of a logged in user)

5)  I look in the EventLog table and it shows a LOGIN_SUCCESS entry so I know everything is correct

The answer is that I had set a Domain in the forms tag in the web.config to "Domain.com" (I did this to make Single Sign On work with another site) Changing that to "Domain2.com" and restarting the website fixed the problem. Basically I was logging in and getting a cookie for the previous domain.

Thank You. This was a very obscure problem.
