Hello,

I have been looking around for ages for the best way to move content from an existing website to a new installation and have not found anything that does that job.

So, I have decided to try and have a go at writing one myself.

I have worked out how to extract the necessary content from the old database based on portalID and Module - I have the "content"

So, the next step is to upload it to the new database.

I have manually created a new website so I have the PortalID

The next steps seems to be:

  • Create a Tab
  • Add a Text Module
  • Update the content of the new Text Module with the content

Am I over simplifying this?

If not, can anyone point me to the stored procedures that I need to add a tab and add a text module?

Any help/ideas would be very much appreciated

it might work, if you are assuming the target database is an (earlier) clone of your current source Website - otherwise you Need to provide Migration for nearly all tables. You Need to make sure, not to overwrite records created on the target Website - at least sitelog and eventlog.
Besides you need to make sure not to create create modules or other records on the target database except from migration - this would allow you to use identity insert, otherwise you'll need translation tables for moduleId etc.
How do you plan to sync modulepermissions and other dependent tables?

Hi Seb,

Sorry for late reply. Didn't get an email notification.

Yes, the above are very good questions - to which I don't yet have all the answers.

But, I have managed to write an early version and have successfully moved 270 pages and content from an old 4.9.4 into 7.0.5 which has solved the bulk of my problems.

Thinking about improving the functionality to mirror the hierarchy in the old site an some other bells and whistles but not sure if its really worth it.
