Hi,

I have just setup a new DNN site at Godaddy using their installation control panel. The latest version they have is 7.0.6, so that's what is currently installed. I have only added a skin to the site, but no real content (it's not being used as of yet). I've downloaded the upgrade version of 7.3.4. Do I just unzip the files on my local system and then just upload / overwrite the current files on the 7.0.6 installation? Or is it more complex than that?

Thanks for any information offered.

That is pretty much it, make sure to "unblock" the ZIP before you extract it in Windows. (right click, properties, unblock).

Try to back everything up if you can before you upload the files.

I'd recommend you look at ditching GoDaddy if possible, their hosting for DNN always causes pains down the road.

Thanks Chris. I did backup the database. But, there's really no content there, so if it goes belly up during the upgrade, I'll just delete the whole DNN install and recreate it manually using the install version of 7.3.4.

I have ~20 clients on Godaddy with DNN sites (for the last 6 years or so). I haven't had too much trouble with them. In fact, their tech support for the hosting accounts is great -- 24/7 and almost always work on the issue until resolved. There's no tech support for DNN though.

My current issue right now is that 7 of my current clients on older DNN platforms (4.9 - 5.5) have been hacked over the last month or so. The hackers didn't mangle the sites, but added 1000's of folders and files to the hosting space(s) apparently to increase their "clients" SEO ratings. Tech support said it's happening because of security issues in DNN. It's mostly happening in the parent folder above the folder the DNN sites live in. I would think that any access gained via DNN would only allow file uploads and such to the space DNN has access to, but tech support says nope. The hacks would allow writing files / folders anywhere in the hosting space. So since all of the sites in question would not survive upgrading DNN more than a few incremental revs (skins / modules / etc would croak) my only real option is to re-build the sites based the latest version of DNN -- the latest version for a few weeks that is ;-)

I have been considering suggesting PowerDNN to my clients, especially to the my current clients needing to rebuild their older DNN sites...

Thanks again!

Jim

Ouch on the hacks, I would agree it sounds like some other issue other than DNN if they aren't hacking into the portals/#/ folders specifically.

Good luck on the rebuilds!

The upgrade of the 'virgin' 7.0.6 site to 7.3.4 went fine for me.

wrt Hacking; My woes in other posts I've made recently are due to the exact same issue at GoDaddy.

The hackers seem to be targeting sites that are running DNN on GoDaddy.  It was why they changed my DNN instance folders to web-visible but NOT web-writable [the app cannot write or modify files].  It is also compounded by the fact that on a large file structure, the tools for changing the folders to 'web-writable' and subfolders to 'inherit' often time-out or error-out before completing the task...  [I do not blame GoDaddy but only wish they told me what they were doing before I wasted so much time debugging the result.  You can see my confusion and frustration in the recent posts]

I too manage dozens of sites and many hosting accounts.  The hackers seem to be after only the DNN and the SMF [Simple Machines Forum] sites for some reason.  I cannot say whether there is something in the DNN code they can trigger to cause the writes, but I have indeed seen and dealt with the results.  The results are overwritten/revised default.aspx files and what appear to be default.htm or index.htm files laden with ads for hundreds or thousands of 'retailer' links.  They are often easy to spot by date or size [an advantage to working alone is I remember what sites I change and when].  The attacks started in May.  I check every site for the tell-tale signs almost every day.

I have also encountered issues where DNN instance A on a server writes files to another instance [folder]  B on the same server.  This seems to have to do with same-named folders or child portals [like /test or /home] on both instances [sorry, but that's as much as I can figure].

GoDaddy now makes folder copies, moves, and any archival un-zips NOT web writable by default.  That is not good for DNN which writes to the file structure on occasion [or a lot during an update...].  [This makes restores of the app files from backups virtually unusable]  If their user tools bomb when you try to fix the rights you just gotta call them and wait an hour on the phone.  As of yesterday they were still trying to figure out why the user software tools are bombing, but they acknowledged the problem.  I usually wait until late at night, when it usually works w/o error...

Bob
