I have installed a couple of new 9.0.1 sites, and upgraded one 8.0.3 site to 9.0.1 successfully. I have just tried upgrading another 8.0.3 site to 9.0.1 and there is a problem. Firstly, the install appeared to stick on 58% (trying to do something with Telerik, but I didn't take note exactly what it was doing). After about 10 minutes stuck on this setting, I thought that perhaps the upgrade had actually completed, but the progress page had stalled (this has happened many, many times in the past!) After reloading the site, everything seemed to be working, until I logged in as SuperUser. It logged in OK, but the menus on the left are mostly missing. I can see the Content, Manage and Settings icons under the DNN logo, but the Content and Settings icons have no pop-out menu, and the pop-out menu for Manage only contains Site Assets, Global Assets and Search Engine Site Map. These are all options that open in the full site window. All of the options that are meant to open in the pop-out panel are not there at all. Any ideas from anyone?

Hello,

I have the exact same thing happen, my local copy of the site works fine. When I uploaded it to the test server I encountered this error.

Update... Tried to run an upgrade on another 8.0.3 site of mine. This time, the upgrade finished in a reasonable time frame, but when I log in as SuperUser, there are NO menus down the left of the page. Only a white bar pops out (not black, as with other 9.0.1 sites), and there is nothing on it - no text, nothing clickable, nothing pops out when I hover over the spots where the Content, Manage and Settings icons should be.

Unlike the above site, this one is basically empty. It has no third-party modules installed. The only unusual thing, perhaps, is that I set up my own very basic skin as a placeholder until the client decides what they want. Perhaps there is an issue with the skin? I'll restore to the old site, change the skin to Xcillion, and try the upgrade again. As for the above site... it is an old site that I created in the days when I was experimenting with third-party skinning solutions, and the skin for it was created with Artisteer. Also, there are quite a few modules on the site, some of which might have compatibility issues with DNN 9, so maybe there is where the problem lies. I'll do more experimenting and update my findings here. In the meantime, any sage advice would be welcome!

Update... Restored 8.0.3 site. Changed skin to Xcillion. Ran upgrade, except this time to 9.0.2 (because I happened to notice that the site was recommending an upgrade to 8.0.3 when it wasn't before, so checked the download site and found 9.0.2 there!) Result? Update failed:

55% Installing Module - DNNCE_SocialGroups_09.00.02_Install.zip

Clicked Retry. After 35 seconds of thinking about it, with no progress shown on the progress bar, suddenly it came back saying upgrade successful! Clicked View Site. Error! Recycled app pool, and reloaded site. OK. Logged in as SuperUser. Same problem - menu bar shows up on the left (not black, though), and it is completely empty!

This was a completely "clean" 8.0.3 site, but it crashes out on what should be a routine upgrade, recommended by DNN. Come on DNN... sort your s*#t out before people start turning to your competitors out of sheer frustration! I've already installed Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal sites for clients - I hate them (from a technical point of view) but at least they work, and upgrades work every time, from within the product, without all the hassle that one has to go through with DNN sites. [rant over... I'll calm down now]

there are known issues with upgraded sites, I'f wait upgrading from DNN 8 to DNN 9 for at least DNN 9.1.0
