I'm trying to upgrade from DNN 4.9.5 to the latest 9.0.2 and getting errors. I found the suggested upgrade path (http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/suggested-upgrade-path) and it suggests upgrading to 5.4.4 from 4.9.5. I did that and got these errors:

00:02:42.497 - Executing Application Upgrades: 05.00.00 Error!
00:04:23.856 - Executing Application Upgrades: 05.03.00 Error!
00:04:33.450 - Installing Package File HTML_Community_05.04.03_Install: Error!
00:04:36.430 - Installing Package File Messaging_01.01.00_Install: Error!
00:04:36.742 - Installing Package File Taxonomy_01.01.00_Install: Error!

I have tried upgrading to 5.1.0 from 4.9.5 also with no luck. I can't even view the site after getting these errors. Is there another version I should try?

Before starting the upgrade, make sure that the install/module directory is empty. Some of those errors could come from trying to install out of date modules. You might want to check that directory after each step, too.

Were there any errors going to 5.1.0? (That's not on the upgrade path.)

Can you get to 5.4.4 successfully?

At each step, if successful, I'd recommend that you make a backup so you can always go back one step.

I would add an upgrade step to 5.3.x.
Make sure, you have .Net 3.5 installed on your server.
Make sure, you didn't forget to unblock the downloaded upgrade package (in File Properties) prior to unzipping the files contained.
Besides clearing /install folders from leftovers, you might do the same with /bin folder, if the site had a number of modules uninstalled or was upgraded before a couple of times.

Thats a long upgrade path. Good luck. Be sure to check the entire site at each stage. I did this from 7-8-9 and didn't realize that 8-9 destroyed my ability to admin the site. Persona bar fails, control bar fails. So between each step, check your admin function are working.

Yep. I ended up rebuilding my site after being able to upgrade from version 3 to 8. Module installs were getting errors and other modules weren't working on the new sites. It was time anyway!

Before embarking, try deleting any unused modules/extensions to minimize potential issues.
