I have been trying to upgrade my DNN 8.0.4 site to 9.0.2 and keep getting the following error:

 

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Okay... I just spent some time on this... It's actually quite easy to resolve, but took some effort in comparing clean and upgraded instances of DNN, and the following JIRA and forum thread helped too.

Make sure you have the proper references for assembly dependencies in web.config:

Make sure you remove the from the httpProtocol in web.config:
