I'm new to DNN (and also new to .net) but so far I really like both (I have a lot of experience with J2EE and PHP/Zend).

One thing that's been bothering me though and it's slowing me down quite a bit is the fact that there is an app restart after every compile of my code. So even for a very small change in the source code, can take 20 seconds to see the result in the browser. This might be OK for someone who is very efficient with VB and DNN, but for someone like me who is a newbie to VB and DNN, I'm finding it very slow!

Is there something I'm missing and is there a way around this? Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Liam

Thanks a million Steve - that's exactly what I'm looking for.

Liam, if you're new to .net you also might not know that there are a few different web code development "models". These are typically called web site projects (WSP) and web application projects (WAP) - whilst both can acheive the same effect, there are differences in approach e.g. WSP code is background compiled so no compilation/app restart is required, whereas WAP projects require deployment, but have advantages in packaging/source control management etc. http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/WspToWap.aspx does a decent job explaining both allowing you to make a choice. Note: many dev's prototype modules in WSP and then transfer the code to a WAP module when it's close to being complete.

 Thanks Cathal.

I had read about WSP vs WAP previously but the implications are really only making sense to me now.

I've implemented the change to the web.config that Steve mentioned - this has really helped speed up my development cycle. Am I correct to say that the change from WAP to WSP you're suggesting will allow me to debug my project without having to attach the debugger to the IIS process?
