I'm new to DNN development and I've been searching through all of the various tutorials online and here on the forums and I find myself a bit stumped.  I'm using VWD 2010 and what I would really like to do is to take an existing module and just add some stuff to it.  I'm getting confused between the starter kit and the various solution and project files and I was wondering if someone could give me some help getting an existing module renamed to something else so I don't mess with the regular DNN version but so that I can get it compiled into my own module to use.

Help!

it depends on the type of module, which steps you need to take, however, install source version of the module and open the solution file with your VWD. Before finishing, you should rename folder, module and namespaces, to avoid your module being overwritten by accident.

I just want to add some simple extra features to the events module.  I unzipped the install of DNN into a folder on my "C" drive then opened VWD and did "open web site".  Then I installed the source version of the Events module like normal from the host -> extensions part of the DNN site.  I didn't see any solution or project files there but I unzipped the "source.zip" inside of the module and it looked like pretty much the same files that the module installed into my DesktopModules\Events with the addition of some files I didn't recognize and some I did (a solution and a project file).

I copied the contents of the source.zip over the top of the already installed module.  Is this the right way to get started with the module or is that not necessary?  Also I was wondering whether I should use the project file or the solution file in VWD 2010.  One of them seems to open but the other one prompts me to convert the file and then says 1 file was not converted.

simply install the source package as any other module and open the solution in VWD 2010 (after you made sure, the paths inside are suiting your situation). Be sure to use latest release candidate from dnnevents.codeplex.com
