I have just started using DNN.  I'm impressed so far and I have been able to figure out how to use the system and make most modifications and build my own modules using VS 2010.
But, I'm stuck on creating custom skins.  I'm not sure if I'm missing something or not looking in the right place.  Ideally I would like to design a site master in HTML and be able to convert the main design to a skin and/or content.  Is there a way to do that in DNN without purchasing some 3rd party application?
Any suggestions or pointers would be apreciated.
Thanks

Tom, I suggest starting with a simple free skin you may enhance and modify, Besides the skinning guide (get it from http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/BooksandDocumentation/ProjectandTechnicalDocumentation/tabid/478/Default.aspx) there are great tutorials from www.dnncreative.com, some even for free.

Cheers from Germany,

Hey Tom,

DNN has built in html to skin conversion tools - but  once you get the hang of the ascx style html markup in skin you may find as many do that the html to ascx conversion process is just not need - ulitmately ascx is just html markup with some different syntax.

The html does need some special markup to assist the process - and the skin needs to be included in a dnn installer package for the conversion process to work.

There are also some fantastic free skins that you can also use add a guide http://www.dnnskins.com/home.aspx
